Top 5 Reasons Your A/C Is Blowing Hot Air

Your AC is running — you can hear the compressor humming — but the air coming out of your vents is warm or barely cool. In South Florida, that's not just uncomfortable, it's a problem you need solved fast. Here are the five most common reasons it happens, in order of how likely you are to encounter them.

1

Thermostat Is Set to 'Fan' Instead of 'Cool'

This is the most common call we get that turns out to be a five-second fix. If your thermostat fan setting is on 'On' instead of 'Auto,' the fan runs continuously — even when the system isn’t actively cooling. The result is warm air blowing out of the vents.

Check your thermostat: make sure it’s set to 'Cool,' the temperature is below the current room temperature, and the fan is set to 'Auto' rather than 'On.'

DIY tip: This one you can check yourself right now — no tools required.
2

Clogged Air Filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow across your evaporator coil. When that coil can't absorb heat properly, the system loses cooling capacity — or worse, the coil freezes over, which also produces warm air.

In South Florida, filters clog fast. Check yours every 30 days and replace it every 60–90 days at most. A clean filter is the single cheapest form of AC maintenance.

3

Low Refrigerant / Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is the substance that actually absorbs heat from the air inside your home. If your system is low on refrigerant, it can't cool effectively — and you'll usually notice ice forming on the refrigerant line or the coil, as well as a hissing or bubbling sound near the unit.

Low refrigerant almost always means a leak. Topping off a system without fixing the leak is a short-term patch. A licensed technician needs to find and repair the leak, then recharge with the correct refrigerant type.

4

Dirty or Blocked Condenser Coil

Your outdoor unit (the condenser) releases the heat your system pulls from inside your home. When the coil is coated in dirt, debris, or vegetation, it can't dissipate heat — so that heat stays in the refrigerant and your air never gets cold.

You can gently rinse the outside of the condenser with a garden hose to clear surface debris. A deeper cleaning requires a technician with the right coil cleaner and the know-how to do it without damaging the fins.

5

Failing Compressor or Capacitor

The compressor is the heart of your AC system — it pressurizes the refrigerant so the cooling cycle can happen. If it's failing or the capacitor that starts it is bad, the outdoor unit may run but not actually compress. The result: ambient-temperature air from your vents.

Compressor and capacitor issues require a technician. The good news is that capacitors are a quick, inexpensive repair. Compressor replacement is more involved, and depending on the age of the system, a full replacement may be worth considering.

The bottom line

If your AC is blowing hot air, start with the thermostat setting and check your filter. Those two things cost nothing to fix. If neither is the issue, the cause is likely refrigerant, the condenser coil, or the compressor — all of which need a technician.

Don't wait too long on a refrigerant or coil issue. What starts as warm air can progress to a frozen coil, damaged compressor, or a full system failure in South Florida heat — especially in summer.
